Our feet are one of the most important organs in our body. It is not only responsible for bearing the entire weight of the body, but also because it makes mobility possible for the human body. Regular physical exercise like jogging, swimming, or cycling is extremely beneficial for our feet and the entire body. Despite all our care, both adults and children are susceptible to foot conditions which may cause great inconvenience in our day-to-day activities. Some of us are born with certain congenital problems, while some of us may develop complications due to accidents and other unforeseen circumstances. It is possible to detect early signs of foot deformities in children, to take proper measures in time which can prevent complications in the future.

Some of the common foot conditions in children which if detected and treated in time, can alleviate their discomfort and help them get better are as follows –

  • Flat feet– The arches of the foot develop as the child grows. However, in some cases, the arc does not develop completely. In this condition, the arches collapse resulting in the entire sole coming in direct contact with the ground.

This condition is extremely common and may not cause a major problem. But in some cases, it can cause discomfort due to over pronation. Custom-made arch support shoes may provide relief and better support to children who suffer from this condition.

  • In-toeing– While suffering from in-toeing, feet turns in an inward direction while walking. Also known as pigeon-toes, this condition makes children more prone to stumbling and falling during movement.  This can be a result of Internal tibial torsion, a condition where the lower part of the child’s limb rotates inwardly.

Another condition is known as femoral anteversion, where an inward rotation of the thigh bone, may cause in-toeing. Moderate conditions are usually harmless and do not cause great inconvenience. In case of severe conditions, there might be difficulties with walking and orthopedic care might be required.

  • Knock-knees-  In kmock-knees,the knees come in contact when the child is standing straight. This also causes a wide gap of three inches or more between the ankles while standing.

This condition usually gets better with time as the child grows up, and may not require any medical care. However, if the misalignment of either of the knees is severe, it may cause pain and may require surgical care.

  • Discomfort in the heel- the child may experience pain in the heel. This can be the symptom of plantar fasciitis. It happens when the thick band of tissues that connect the toes to the heel bones inflates.

Another condition that can cause discomfort to the heels is Sever’s disease. This happens when the tendon at the back of the heel tightens. This exerts a pull on the growth plate in the heel.

  • Bow legs- this is a condition where the knees move outward while standing with the feet and ankles in contact. Children below 2 years of age usually have bowed legs which are not due to any underlying conditions.

However, if this condition may require medical care, as this may be a sign of Blount’s disease or rickets.
