Child walking in the CuraFoot clinic

Children’s feet have a unique development pattern and function. Yet, foot health in kids is often neglected. This may lead to problems not only in the feet but elsewhere as well – for example in the legs and back.

In some cases, kids’ foot problems can even lead to depression or other personality disorders. A child with foot problems may walk awkwardly or not be very athletic. Sometimes this can lead to children being shy or introverted. They may start avoiding sports and other social functions completely.

Please contact CuraFoot Clinic for an appointment if you notice any of the following:

  • Your child complains of pain in their feet, ankles or legs
  • Your child is constantly tripping and falling
  • You notice uneven shoe wear
  • Your child asks to be carried more than other kids of the same age
  • Your child has a gait or foot position when walking that you think might be unusual
  • You notice any skin rashes, hard skin, lumps or bumps on the feet

Check-ups for Your Kids Feet

Regular foot check-ups can prevent later problems. Many foot problems that affect adults have their origins in childhood. In fact, many are present at birth. When caught early, we can often help prevent problems that will bother your child as older children, adolescents or adults. Here are some of the consequences of foot and leg issues:

Walking awkwardly

Kids with foot problems may walk awkwardly

Less athletic

Kids with foot problems may not be as athletic as they could

Avoiding sports & social

Kids with foot issues may avoid sports and social functions

Shy or introverted

All of these can lead children to be shy, introverted or less comfortable socially

When Should Your Child Have Their Feet and Gait Checked?

Children should have a regular foot check-up at these important milestones:

  • When beginning to walk (about 12 months)
  • Age 3 (this is when children develop a more adult “heel-to-toe” gait)
  • Age 6 (when starting school)
  • Before beginning organized sports

It is not often that kids complain about foot or ankle pain, because parents are unaware of the pediatric foot deformities, so it's better to visit or consult a doctor at the earliest.

Your first visit

  1. Book your visit Request an appointment online, call or WhatsApp the clinic. The clinic desk confirms a time with you.
  2. Assessment A podiatrist (foot doctor) or a doctor asks about your symptoms and examines your feet, and may check how you stand and walk with a foot scan or gait analysis.
  3. Your treatment plan You leave with a clear plan: treatment, exercises and footwear advice, or custom insoles made from your foot scan.

What to bring: previous prescriptions, X-rays, MRI or lab reports and your list of medicines. Wear the footwear you use most often: it helps with the assessment.

Children’s Feet: your questions

What signs of foot problems should I look for in my child?

Look out for your child complaining of pain in their feet, ankles or legs, constantly tripping and falling, or asking to be carried more than other children their age. Uneven shoe wear, an unusual gait or foot position, and skin rashes, hard skin, lumps or bumps on the feet are also worth having checked.

At what ages should my child's feet be checked?

Children should have a foot check-up when they begin to walk (about 12 months), at age 3, when they develop a more adult heel-to-toe gait, at age 6 when starting school, and before beginning organised sports.

Why do regular foot check-ups matter for children?

Many foot problems that affect adults begin in childhood, and many are present at birth. When caught early, they can often be kept from troubling your child as they grow older. Children do not often complain about foot or ankle pain, so regular check-ups help.

Can foot problems affect my child in other ways?

Yes. Neglected foot problems can lead to problems elsewhere, for example in the legs and back. A child with foot problems may walk awkwardly, be less athletic, or avoid sports and social functions, which can leave them shy or less comfortable socially.

When should I bring my child to a foot specialist?

If you notice any of the warning signs, or your child reaches one of the milestone ages, it is better to consult a doctor at the earliest. Our team loves working with children and tries to make visits as easy as possible. Please book an assessment at CuraFoot.
